Are you Ready for Shopify UX?

At Shopify, our UX team drives a holistic user experience, reflecting our knowledge of industry, passion for users, and craft expertise. In practice this means: 

  • All UXers are responsible for talking to users and conducting primary research. 

  • We value craft expertise and want to work with people who get shit done — this is true for both crafters and managers

  • All designers at Shopify are expected to have foundational content design skills, should be comfortable with information architecture concepts, and be able to write basic microcopy that meets Shopify’s standards. 

  • We don’t have an accessibility or mobile team - it is everyone’s responsibility to design for these modalities. 

  • We’re curious and optimistic about AI and explore ways it can enhance our work

  • UXers at Shopify partner with front-end engineers, show technical curiosity, and embrace tools like Github and coded prototypes as methods to collaborate. 

  • Our work extends beyond Figma files; we have high care for the end-to-end experience that is shipped to our users.

Product Designers

  • Demonstrate a command of product strategy, business needs, domain expertise — using a range of UX tactics to achieve exceptional user-centered product outcomes

  • Craft beautiful designs and delightful, useful, and usable experiences; you have experience in visual design, interaction, and product design

  • Are tireless in pursuit of continuous improvement and learning

  • Interpret experiments and tests, and leverage quantitative data to inform product and design decisions

  • Are a practiced communicator and storyteller — helping your team and stakeholders grasp the extent of a problem, build empathy for the end user, and support your design rationale

  • Work with a growth mindset, a proactive approach to professional development, and a proven ability to lead through ambiguous problems

  • Mentor and guide others, empowering them to elevate their craft and expertise

  • Are enthusiastic about leveraging AI and ML to drive innovative product design

  • Have a deep mastery of your design tools, and a willingness to adopt new tools and skills needed to bring your designs and prototypes to life (heads up: we work in Figma, GitHub, and occasionally in code)

Content Designers

  • Craft coherent, tasteful, and accessible user experiences, specializing in multiple content design subdomains

  • Tackle high-value problems with a deep understanding of related disciplines, enhancing Shopify's product narrative

  • Excel in IA, terminology, and conversational design, while seeking continuous learning through constructive critique

  • Communicate with exceptional clarity — helping teams grasp problems, empathize with users, and support design rationale effectively

  • Select tools with resourcefulness — aiming for efficiency and impact, and leveraging platforms like Github and Figma strategically

  • Be self-reliant and proactive, excel in interpreting data, mentor others, and embrace new AI and ML tools enthusiastically

UX Leadership 

  • Have a proven track record in managing multi-disciplinary teams, guiding career development, identifying skill gaps for mentorship, and contributing to team growth and excellence

  • Show exceptional command of product strategy, business needs, and domain expertise, with strategic thinking extending to broader organizational goals and market landscape

  • Apply deep experience collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, including development, product management, data, and product research

  • Communicate with exceptional clarity, and are adept at conveying problem extent, building empathy, supporting design rationale, and influencing stakeholders at all levels

  • Navigate complexity using systems thinking, guiding teams to design within intricate ecosystems for a seamless user experience

  • Bring a deep craft background in visual, interaction, content, and product design, leveraging expertise to upskill teams and drive exceptional outcomes
